Obituary for Jacqueline Owens

Jacqueline Delores (Brooks) Owens, 86 of Lebanon, CT, unexpectedly went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 11, 2017. She was born on April 13, 1931 in Rexfield, Iowa to the late Leonard and Mary (Washington) Brooks. She was the wife of the late Burton Owens of Ohio.

Jacqueline loved her community and dedicated her life to serving it. She served as the Norwich Branch President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for 30 years. She received countless awards for her hard work and dedication to the NAACP and a host of other community organizations in Norwich and its surrounding areas. She was also a strong advocate for the NAACP youth council, ACT-SO Program.

Jacqueline’s devotion to the Norwich community was enduring and effective. Her efforts to educate the community and make them aware of the need to unite and work together were very successful. She left anyone who came in contact with her in awe, because the more she aged, the more productive she seemed to become. Even after she retired from 30 years of dedicated service to the NAACP as their President, she continued to mentor and consult others who wanted to follow in her tireless footsteps.

Jacqueline loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served as the Mother of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 60 Blackhall St. New London, CT. She was a member of the Usher Board and the Missionary Society. She was also a Trustee of the church. The residing Pastor at Trinity Missionary is Reverend Wade Hyslop. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and the community as a whole.

Jacqueline leaves to cherish her memory four sisters: Anna Juarez (Roberto), Florence Hess (Verges), Judy Crawl (Frank), all residing in Milwaukee, WI, and Minerva Dudley Cook (Milton) who resides in New London, CT. Five Grandchildren: Leonard E. Owens and Jonathan Owens of Norwich, CT, William C. Owens (LeShonda) of Mansfield Ctr., CT, Oliva Owens of Ashford, CT and Toby M. Owens (Nyla). Two Great Grandchildren: Robert T. Riley IV of Franklin, CT and Aria Rose Owens of Mansfield Ctr., CT. One daughter-in-law: Sandra Owens of Norwich, CT., and a host of other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband and parents Jacqueline was predeceased by two twin sons: Burton Miles Owens and Albert Edwin Owens (Sandra); both born in Milwaukee, WI. Her Maternal grandparents: William and Frances Washington. Her Paternal grandparents: William and Sally Brooks, and two brothers: William Brooks and Samuel Dudley.

A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Jacqueline D. Owens Auditorium which was dedicated in honor of Jacqueline by the Kelly Middle School at 25 Mahan Drive in Norwich, CT 06360. Calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service in the auditorium. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.

In Lieu of flowers the family would prefer to have any donations sent to the N.A.A.C.P, 66 Franklin Street, Suite 12 of Norwich, CT 06360 or the N.A.A.C.P Youth Council ACT-SO Program.
